The International Joint Commission released the first triennial assessment of progress on water quality in the Great Lakes on November 28th, 2017. The Commission is calling for Ohio to declare Western Lake Erie impaired. In the report, the Commission found that the governments (both Canada and the U.S.) are falling short of meeting human health objectives, “[Particularly] objectives for drinking water and recreational water uses.” The report also noted objectives that address toxic pollutants that are harmful to humans, wildlife and aquatic ecosystems in the Great Lakes Basin are not being met.
