University of Illinois Extension states this may be the year for cover crops. According to the growing degree day (GDD) accumulation so far, the corn crop this year will most likely reach maturity by end of August. The earlier harvest date will mean cover crops can be planted earlier this year, establishing more growth for the coming winter. The average first frost now occurs in mid October, giving up to month for plant growth.
